Lake Orta is the westernmost of the great lakes of the Italian pre-Alps, located between the Lake Maggiore basin to the east (from which it is separated from the (Mottarone massif) and the mountains to the west (such as Monte Croce) that separate it from the Valsesia. The lake is originates from the southern front of the Simplon glacier.

At the center of the lake there is the island of San Giulio.
